Detection of single-trial neonatal auditory evoked responses via spatial filtering

چکیده
Several groups, including ours, have attempted to use MEG to record the fetal auditory evoked response. Because the recordings are so difficult to make, it is helpful to study the same signals in neonates. Neonatal auditory evoked responses (nAERs) are relatively easy to record because they have much larger amplitude; however, typically the recordings are quite variable due to changes in state and movement artifact. In such circumstances, averaging the evoked responses may give poor results. We have found, however, that it is often possible to detect the nAER with little or no averaging. In this work we investigate the use of a signal processing method known as linearly constrained minimum variance (LCMV) spatial filtering for improving the signal-to-noise ratio of single trial nAERs.

Comparing a template approach and complex bandpass filtering for single-trial analysis of auditory evoked M100.
Two methods for single-trial analysis were compared, an established parametric template approach and a recently proposed non-parametric method based on complex bandpass filtering. The comparison was carried out by means of pseudo-real simulations based on magnetoencephalography measurements of cortical responses to auditory signals. The comparison focused on amplitude and latency estimation of ...
متن کاملAn automated and fast approach to detect single-trial visual evoked potentials with application to brain-computer interface.
OBJECTIVE This study aims (1) to develop an automated and fast approach for detecting visual evoked potentials (VEPs) in single trials and (2) to apply the single-trial VEP detection approach in designing a real-time and high-performance brain-computer interface (BCI) system. METHODS The single-trial VEP detection approach uses common spatial pattern (CSP) as a spatial filter and wavelet filt...
متن کاملThe Relationship between the Behavioral Hearing Thresholds and Maximum Bilirubin Levels at Birth in Children with a History of Neonatal Hyperbilirubinemia
Introduction: Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia is one of the most important factors affecting the auditory system and can cause sensorineural hearing loss. This study investigated the relationship between behavioral hearing thresholds in children with a history of jaundice and the maximum level of bilirubin concentration in the blood. Materials and Methods: This study was performed on 18 children...
متن کاملSystematic latency variation of the auditory evoked M100: from average to single-trial data.
Standard analyses of neurophysiologically evoked response data rely on signal averaging across many epochs associated with specific events. The amplitudes and latencies of these averaged events are subsequently interpreted in the context of the given perceptual, motor, or cognitive tasks. Can such critical timing properties of event-related responses be recovered from single-trial data? Here, w...

OBJECTIVE To develop an effective approach for enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and identifying single-trial short-latency somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) from multi-channel electroencephalography (EEG). METHODS 128-channel SEPs elicited by electrical stimuli of the left posterior tibial nerve were recorded from 11 healthy subjects. Probabilistic independent component analysis...
